Weekly Filler 9

FHL SERMON

Announce Relive overnighter this Friday and pass out invitation cards.

Describe why Jesus laid down his life for us, then linking it to God challenging us to “lay down our lives” and getting dirty serving others in our walk with Christ.

Start
Why did Jesus have to die?
Jesus had to die because God is perfect and sinless. We as humans constantly fall for sin because in the beginning satan entered the world creating sin.
So since we are sinners we cannot be with God in heaven without Jesus. Jesus was also perfect like God, he was his son. Since Jesus died on the cross he washed us clean of all our sins so we can spend eternity with him in heaven.

Activity:
Have kids draw a “straight” line on a piece of paper and have them compare it to the others. Then compare the lines to a ruler.

No matter how straight we think our line is and how it compares to others, we are all “crooked” compared to Jesus (ruler). When we ask for forgiveness Jesus straightens us out because he died to save our sins.

BRIDGE

Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for us by laying down his life to save us. As a Christian God calls us to “lay down our lives” in a sense by putting aside our needs and wants to help others.

Application…Applying what Jesus did to your life.

Depending on where we are in our walk with Christ this looks different. For those of us who are just starting our journey that may look like giving someone else the last donut, doing a chore for a sibling, or giving up a trip to kings island to serve at Mathew 25 Ministries or New Life Mission in Hamilton. These are just little things that make a huge difference. As we grow in our faith in become older more opportunities come into play. There is a family that attends our church that felt God calling them out. In response the Branes moved there entire family including their two young children to Burkina Faso, Africa. They guide people there into the light of Christ and teach them what it looks like to be a Jesus Freak or follower of Christ. This is what God is calling us to do, but maybe not shipping our family to Africa. What do you think that you could do to “lay down your life” like Jesus did?

Closure
When God enters your life it changes FOREVER. I challenge you guys to start living your life like Jesus did during this month. “Lay down your life”, decide what this would look like depending on your position. Maybe its leaving that last slice of pizza at CI CI’s for the guy next to you and wait for the next round. Whatever it is start living your life for God and others before you! Get dirty and serve!

Filler Week 8

20140325-124653.jpg

I typed this as a “short testimony” for one I my friends who are starting an Instagram page called This is: God’s People- about people that god has had an impact on! Check it out here

I grew up in church my entire life. As I came up in such an atmosphere I must have heard the phrases “Jesus loves you” and “god has a purpose for your life” a billion times. What I failed to grasp at the time was that going to church and saying hopeful phrases isn’t Christianity. By the time I was 11 or 12, like most people, I had a very minimalistic relationship with god. Then, while I was the farthest from God, he began calling me. My family started attending a prayer meeting ran by one of my fathers childhood friends, and for the first time I saw the relationship part of Christianity. The speaker would give multiple opportunities to accept Christ or get closer with god. I didn’t really know what to think about it. I was pretty content with where I was. There was a certain heaviness on my heart though, and it had been growing for a while. I felt kinda washed up in a sense. I had tried to fill it with relationships, but only ended up broken and falling into sin. It is for this reason, that as I sat and watched the hands lifted all around me I made a decision I will never forget. The speaker said something along the lines of being a leader for a generation and how it starts with a dedicated relationship to god. I didn’t really understand what he meant, but he left the alter open for prayer, and I was tired of searching for relief- so after probably 10 minutes of telling myself it was dumb to go up there, I went. Everything changed that night. God came so close to me. While being prayed for I saw completely broken and hurt people walking down my schools hallway. I felt the same devastating heartbreak I had felt moments ago hit me so hard. I asked god what this was. He told me “This is your generation. Show them the hope I am giving you tonight. Preach to them my love,” After the prayer was over I was in total shock. I took what god had said to me seriously, and founded COR13ministries, an outreach program that runs nearly 8 different events in my local middle school. However the thing I am most proud of is the impact I have had on my friends and family. Our purpose as Christians is to get into a relationship with god and mimic that relationship, that revolutionary love with those around us (1st COR. 13). I have spent many long nights praying for those who have nothing to hold on to, and many long days sharing their burdens and living out Christ’s love. My dream for these people is not one of mega churches or humongous revival. My dream is a dream where all not only here the words “Jesus loves you” and “god has a plan for your life” but that those who here such things know without a doubt that they are true, because of the conduct, because of the relationship with Christ, those who say it have. It is time push away our different denominations, set aside our temperate happiness and realize that there are people out there dying with out hope, dying for no good reason whatsoever, because we are too busy worrying about what people will think about us. Wake up and realize the nothin matters, nothing last bit three things- faith, hope, and love, “and the greatest f these is love” If there is one thing I have learned it’s that the most important time is now. Now is the time to stand! Now is the time to love!

Filler Week 7

20140315-113719.jpg

A growing trend has sprouted amongst churches. One that I can no longer refuse to properly address. It has corrupted our meetings, tore down or sermons, and at last, has made way to my very own feet. What is this terrible monster I’m talking about?
Numbers!

The number game seems to have become everything within the modern church. In a world where population is booming and churches holding tens of thousands are a common thing, I feel it has become hard not to want a large congregation. I have sadly found that I have let such a longing for a large gathering intrude my very own thoughts.

I recently reexamined myself after FHL. I was so bummed out that once again we had the magic number of (wait for it), 5 people show up… again! Every single FHL we have been cursed with the “low” attendance of just 5 people. Then later that week I was praying asking God for a larger attendance. I felt no real response or like anything was going to change so i decided to move on for a while. Soon a friend reminded me of this scripture-

Matthew 18:20

New International Version (NIV)

20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

I knew the moment I read over this for the hundredth billion time in my life it was Gods way of saying “Heres your answer, take it or leave it”

God was saying straight out that I was totally wrong. God reminded me that revival doesn’t begin in the heart of many. It begins in the heart of the one who takes a wee little step, and stands up. That’s where revival begins! Afterwords a question was put on my heart.

Then who will start revival? Will it be you? Will you be courageous in faith? Even if it means just the small things? Even is it means just 5 people? Even if it means holding out and letting go of everything you ever thought actually mattered!

We need to start preying that God will give us the wisdom to love and appreciate and make a difference in the lives of those he has given us. If you can change one person for God, save one life, speak one word of hope into someone, then- then you have started revival.
